After a gastric bypass, patients are usually advised to take in about 60 - 80 grams of protein per day. This can be a challenge in the beginning because they can only eat very small amount of food at a time. As time goes on, people can eat larger amounts of food and they may be able to get all of their protein from food. But in the beginning, most people rely on protein drinks to get enough. This is especially true in the first week or two after surgery, when most patients are on a liquid diet.
