Protein needs vary based upon the individual; the needs of an elderly woman verses a male athlete will vary greatly. Many are concerned with not getting enough protein, and some are concerned about taking in too much protein. Most meat-eaters do not have a problem getting enough protein unless they are unable to take in nourishment or are seeking high protein intake for building lean muscle mass. Vegetarians rely heavily on legumes, soy (such as tofu) and milk products for protein, but may need to find ways to supplement.
