We decided to cut down on our wheat products about a year ago. We also try to eat organic products. Arrowhead Mills Organic Rice & Shine Hot Cereal is delicious and healthy. We feel strongly that rice should always be organic.
I'm reviewing these three products because they go together. I have many more rice-based products that are excellent.
Arrowhead Mills makes a whole line of products. The company came to be over 40 years ago by a man named Frank Ford who thought crops were weakened by pesticides. He started growing his products organically. In 1999, The Hain Celestial Group bought Arrowhead Mills. A company that had 2 products now has over 200.
It can be purchased online at www.arrowheadmills.com. I buy a 24 ounce box for $3.79 at Whole Foods. Each serving is ¼ of a cup so you'll get 16 servings out of the box. Per serving you get 150 calories; no cholesterol; 1 gram of fat, 0 sodium, 32 grams of carbohydrates, no sugar, and 2 grams of fiber and 3 grams of sugar.
The ingredient is organic brown rice grits. It is USDA certified organic. On the back of the box you'll find a couple of recipes as well as the cooking instructions. The instructions are for stove top and the microwave. We use our rice cooker. It is delicious. It has a sweet sort of nutty taste. It's soft and can be compared to the consistency of oatmeal.
You may be wondering what I put in my Rice & Shine. I personally like bananas, blueberries (They can be frozen; they'll thaw quickly.), nuts, ground flaxseed, ground sesame seed and the next product I'm reviewing which is NutriBiotic Vegan Rice Protein Powder. It comes in a large 1 pound 5 ounce canister. The prices range depending on where you buy it. We pay about $14.00 and can often find it in the grocery store. If we can't then Whole Foods sells it as well as the website www.nutribiotic.com
When I make my Rice & Shine I put in this Rice Protein Powder. It's a vegetable protein that doesn't have ingredients that many people are allergic to such as eggs and wheat. It mixes easily in water or juice but it's so easy to put on cereal that I would recommend that use. One heaping tablespoon is the serving size giving us 40 servings in the canister. There are 55 calories; .3 grams of fat (0.1gram is saturated); no cholesterol; 8 mg or sodium; 1.8 grams of carbohydrates; 1 gram of sugar; and 12 grams of protein. It has no milk or soy either. What it does have is enzymatically processed rice protein from California and brown rice. I cannot find this product in an organic form.
The brown rice is ground into a fine flour and then filtered water is added which forms a thick substance. Natural enzymes are added at various states to break down the carbohydrate from the protein. This is all done below 90 degrees which keeps the amino acids in tact. To finish this process it gets filtered, dried and milled at a low temperature.
NutriBiotic was founded in 1980 based on the principle that everyone deserves good health. The company's inspiration came from research and recommendations of the word's only two time Nobel Laureat, Linus Pauling, Ph.D.
Now I have my cereal and my protein powder. I want to add milk. What I do is put the milk into the rice cooker to warm it up but that's just a tip. You can use it however you like.
Finally something wet gets put in our cereal. We drink Rice Dream most of the time although my husband bought Rice Drink from Trader Joe's which I will compare in another review.
The one reason I like Rice Dream is because it is organic. Rice Dream costs about $4.00 for 64 ounces. It is lactose free and made of organic brown rice and filtered water.
Note: This is not to be used as formula for a baby. You should shake Rice Dream before using it; refrigerate it after opening it and drink it within a week or so of opening it. One benefit to Rice Dream and other similar products is that when not opened it can stay in your cupboard.
It tastes good. Some people say it's an acquired taste. In coffee and cereal I don't know the difference. Rice Dream comes in the Original flavor which I currently have. I like the Vanilla flavor as well. Honestly there is nothing better than Oreo cookies dipped in regular milk; however I can't remember the last time I had either! It is not totally gluten free having barley protein but in a very tiny amount.
It comes in 8, 32 and 64 ounce sizes. One cup which is 8 ounces has 120 calories; 2.5 grams of fat; 1.5 grams of monosaturated fat; 100 grams of sodium; 23 grams of carbohydrates; no fiber; 10 grams of sugar and 1 gram of protein. It has 10% of Vitamin A; 30% of Calcium; 4% of Iron; 25% of Vitamin D; 25% of Vitamin B12.
Here's to a healthy breakfast!
